Sega is Delisting Tons of Its Classic Games

Sega is set to delist a significant portion of its classic back catalog from digital storefronts in December, including the Sega Genesis Classics collection and several beloved titles from the Dreamcast era. According to a FAQ on the Sega support website, these games will become unavailable for purchase just before midnight PST on December 6.

The Sega Genesis Classics collection will be removed from sale on Steam and the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch stores. Additionally, 11 games will be delisted from the Xbox store, which includes all Xbox 360 versions of classic titles available through backward compatibility. Notable games affected include Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, Shinobi, and Sonic Team’s surreal Saturn-era platformer, Nights into Dreams.

Over 60 titles will be delisted from Steam, affecting both individual purchases and bundles like Genesis Classics and Dreamcast Classics. Among the impacted games are fan favorites such as Ecco the Dolphin, Jet Set Radio, Treasure’s iconic action game Gunstar Heroes, ToeJam & Earl, and Space Channel 5: Part 2.

Sega has clarified that the catalog of classic Sega Genesis games included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription will remain available for play. Additionally, users who already own the games will still have access to download and play them after the delisting date. It appears that the Sega Ages series of high-quality Nintendo Switch rereleases, developed by port specialist M2, will not be affected by this delisting either.

Sega’s FAQ did not provide a specific reason for this move or outline any future plans to keep its classic games accessible. The motivation behind such a large-scale removal remains a mystery. While licensing issues often lead to game delistings, these are unlikely to be the cause here, as many of the games are wholly owned by Sega.

Currently, Sega is pursuing a revival of several classic properties, with new games in development for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage. The company is even considering adaptations for some of these franchises as movies and TV shows. This makes the decision to remove some of these classics from sale particularly puzzling, though it may indicate a desire to change how older games are presented and marketed.

The emulation quality in Sega Genesis Classics has been criticized, the Xbox 360 ports show their age, and the Dreamcast-era ports on Steam are functional but lack polish. It’s possible that a comprehensive revamp is underway; the ongoing availability of the excellent Sega Ages releases suggests that the delisting might be related to quality concerns. If that’s the case, hopefully, Sega will act swiftly to ensure this substantial part of its legacy remains available for purchase and play.
