When asked about the decision to pursue a prequel rather than continuing with Gears 6, Fergusson responded that it was a “really smart” choice, despite it diverging from his original plans. He elaborated that his intent for Gears 6 was to leave the planet Sera, which has been ravaged by the Locust invasion. “I was just getting us off Sera, so Gears 6 was to leave Sera,” he explained.
Fergusson went on to discuss how the story would utilize rocket technology from the Union of Independent Republics (UIR), which was hinted at in Gears 5. He mentioned, “We were sort of laying the seeds and the groundwork that in taking over that UIR territory, we’ve adopted their space program.” His goal was to explore what leaving Sera could mean for the characters and the broader galaxy, albeit in a more grounded manner. “It was old, Russian-era, Sputnik-type tech, so we weren’t going to start Mass Effect-ing this. It was really about, ‘let’s get you to a new place to encounter what this looks like,'” Fergusson stated.
While the idea of venturing into space is intriguing, fans have expressed concerns about whether this approach would effectively tie the series together. Many believe that the characters themselves need a refresh, with some wishing to see a departure from JD Fenix and his crew in favor of a more engaging cast. “Maybe they’re not even COGs.
